Another great milestone — a new publication in the Food Research International journal!

12. Novemeber 2025 - We are proud to announce the publication of our latest research in Food Research International, exploring the effectiveness of Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) technology in reducing spoilage microorganisms in plant-based beverages.

How Pulsed Electric Fields can help reduce spoilage bacteria in plant-based drinks

Arisa Thamsuaidee, Matteo Stefanelli and Claudia Siemer from Elea, together with Vasilis Valdramidis from the University of Athens, have disseminated their research on: “Resistance of vegetative spoilage microorganisms to pulsed electric field (PEF) decontamination in almond-based milk alternatives”. The study compares two PEF treatment chamber designs with regards to their microbial inactivation performance.

Key findings include:

  • PEF is effective in decontaminating spoilage bacteria in almond-based beverages.

  • The colinear treatment chamber showed the highest inactivation levels.

  • The thermal impact was overall lower with the parallel treatment chamber.
